Physical Energy Transactions

How to capture a physical deal?

QR Trade Capture ETRM offers complete trading solutions for energy and commodity related financial instruments such as forwards, futures, swaps, swaptions , OTC and options.
QR Trade Capture ETRM offers the ability to rapidly create and customize via user friendly wizards:

  • Trading templates or pages to capture and manage all aspects of physical (generation, wholesale or retail) energy contracts, based on user defined fields. You can thus configure the system by entering any desired deal capture field to match the specifics and requirements of a given local energy market or power pool: various pricing plans, physical constraints, delivery fields, transmission, loss factors, complex indices, tariffs, charges, fees, incentives, penalties etc.
  • The layout of the user interfaces for the Trading Temple you just created above with your user input fields.
  • The data type and specifications required to properly capture and store the data for the user input fields in the Trading Template. Note that the actual database tables are created automatically by the system at this stage without the need for any programming.

How to handle complex prices?

Physical trades can have numerous charges and fees, with complex valuation rules. You can insert as many charges as desired into the body of a trade and literally type in the formula for its valuation. In electricity markets there can be dozens of such charges for generators, and physical retailers. In addition, you can flag a charge as pass through or absorbed, meaning invoiced to the counterparty or not.

The main price of a physical trade itself, can be a complex index. Mixing data of different time scales is allowed and automatically handled by the formula evaluator.

Fuel Index = [ Biweekly Average Fuel Oil ] * [ Monthly Average FX USD EUR ] * [ Yearly Heat Rate Curve]

How to handle physical volumes?

  • The QR Trade Capture is backed by a very sophisticated database for its data types. It can take in deal volumes and prices across multiple phases, each with a different time scale. For example, contracted volume can be Monthly or daily, and yet the actualized volume can be an hourly meter reading. Each data phase can have multiple publications or runs. For example, actualized volume or price phases can have an initial phase, then an intermediary run and a final run. The System always uses "best available" data in settlement and valuation. Both prices and volumes can be time varying curves.
  • User defined profiles, such as On, Off and Supper Peak, can be attached to a transaction.
  • A given trade can have multiple volumes, each with a different pricing scheme. For example, a physical power deal, along with energy volume, can also deliver reactive power, based on a different price structure. These can be on different time scale.

Flexibility in settling physical deals

Settling physical energy deals and taking them to billing and invoicing is quite challenging. These typically have many indices or curves to account for the cost of energy, charges, incentives, fees, tariffs, penalties, transportation, as well as multiple volume curves or meter reading, such as energy and reactive power, etc. These curves vary for generation, wholesale and retail.

QR ETRM offers utmost flexibility for the valuation of these curves. A user friendly wizard allows you to rapidly type in, create and customize the valuation formulas needed to value, and settle every price or charge curve. See QR Cash Flow Mapping and Settlement
